T H Elong continuance of wet wickets was all against the batsmen last summer, and as a consequence the averages generally were hardly up to the standard of the previous year. Arthur Shrewsbury's absence in Australia robbed English cricket of its most successful exponent in 1887, and his sound and scientific play wasgreatly missed . O nthe whole, though , considering the state of the grounds, the figures were very creditable . Mr. W. G. Grace's aggregate wasthe highest of the year, and though his average was not so good as that of Mr. W. W . Read, hehas still no superior . Mr. Readwas seen , too , to great advantage , and his score of 338 for Surrey against Oxford ranks only second to Mr. W. G. Grace's 344 in 1876 as the best onrecord . Abel wasthe only other cricketer to get over a thousand runs during the season . His batting was consistently brilliant , andhe was certainly the best professional bat of 1888. H o wthe other leading cricketers fared will be gathered from the following tables . One of the most noteworthy features of the season was the marked advance of Mr. Bowden, who proved himself to be quite in the front rank of amateurs on last year's form.
