THEexceptional performances of the Surrey players during the last two summers have attracted such general interest as to thoroughly familiarize the cricket public with all the various members of the team. Andcertainly the County has good reason to be proud in every wayof the eleven whose joint efforts have replaced it in the foremost position it occupied thirty years ago. Thoughthe revival has beenin a very great measure due to the untiring energy and personal influence of the captain , Mr. John Shuter, success could not have been assured had he not been cordially and loyally supported by the amateurs and professionals under his command. Singularly fortunate in the professionals he has had under him, the Surrey captain has been able to inoculate his m e nwith all his own keenness , and the result has been a hearty good-fellowship and a feeling of confidence in each other , which have done much to contribute to the well -being and efficiency of the team. Nocounty eleven has of late years shown such good all -round cricket ; none aroused such universal sympathy or proved more popular with the cricket public , 2
