Rose (14.1 ): Gives promise of making an excellent bat; plays with confidence and judgment; very fair bowler ; rather slow in the field . A. E. Clapham (13.1 ) : His aspirations are often heavenwards ; places well-in the air-but has made runs; a really good field " in the country " ; can bowl. S. B. Noakes (10.2 ) : A steady , determined little bat ; has the making of a most useful cricketer ; must endeavour to quicken his pace between the wickets ; fair field . E. Patey (6.3) : Has more than realized expectations ; good at the wickets , in the field , and with the bat; hits especially well to leg . M. H. Lubbock (6.2 ) : A splendid little field at cover ,but should endeavour to improve his return of the ball-winds up alittle too muchbefore throwing ; anxiety to score leads himto hit a little too much. W . Bamford, Captain (5.2 ) : Always stylish , but not so effective as stylish ; has really the making of a first -rate bat, provided nerve does not forsake him; splendid field anywhere, but especially at point; hasbowledexcellently this season. H. E. Matthews(3.2): G o o dbat, thoughrather weakonthe off-stump; should endeavour to cultivate more forward play ; hits hard onthe on side; improved field . A. G. Purves (3) : Showsgreat promise as a bowler , and is often difficult toplay a nimprovingbat andfield . B.Baker: W i t ha little morenerve will bowl very well indeed ; we expect , too, next season to see him make runs , E. F. Rose : Will probably bat verywell indeed next season ,but he must guard against pulling ; fair field , and change bowler. A. T. Spens : Bowled well at the beginning of the season , and will probably do so again ; no need for discouragement ; improving bat; reliable field . W .B a m f o r d A .G .Purves A. E. Clapham A. T. Page, Captain (30.21): His batting, if somewhatdeficient in elegance, is thoroughly consistent and effective ; plays with plenty of judgment , but should cultivate greater freedom of style ; very fair wicket-keeper; as captain is to b e congratulated o n a very successful season , but might have made greater use of the subordinate bowling talent in the team. B. H. Drury (16.73 ): A very free and pretty bat, with plenty of hitting power; a really good slow bowler , keeps a capital length , and breaks both ways; fine point, but should not neglect the balls just played betweenthe wickets; playedfor D e v o n Countyeleven . *G. H. Arundell (12.30 ) : Another very free bat, with good style and hitting power; good field . E. C. Sharp (12.25 ) : Has been unable to play , owing to aninjured knee, a n dhis absence hasbeen no small loss to the team; a good bat, with vigorous defence. C. R. M. Whithard : Has not fulfilled the promise he showed last season ; plays tameand withoutspirit ; w ehopethat with plenty of practice next season he will retrieve his position. C. J. Francis (20.73 ) : Earned and deserved the " soubriquet " of the " Bannerman" of the team; averypatient andsteadybat, withplentyof punishingpowero n occasion; style ugly a n dcramped; fast bowler, withgoodlength, but rather inclined to overbowl himself. W . M . Goodwyn(17.85): Agood, defensive bat, slow run-getter ; apparently does not realize the capabilities of a half-volley ; hadbadluck early inthe season in being run out several times. W. H. Smith (14.9 ) : Shows considerable promise as a bat , and we hope great things of him next season; a left-handbowler, fairly fast , w h owith practice should becomeformidable. *A. G. Frith (8.84) : Ahardhitter , but deficient in defence ; moderate change bowler , medium pace; goodfield . B O W L I N G A V E R A G E S . B .H .D r u r y C. J. Francis G .H .Arundell H .T.
