James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1889
T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DP U B L I CSCHOOLSIN 1888. Rose (1885-8 ) : At the beginning of the season bowled badly, but latterly has improved , and has once or twice bowled as well as he ever did; a vigorous and lively bat, andnever loses a run; fields well at a near place in front of the wicket , whereheis one of the best in the team. H. T. S. Gedge (1887-8 ) : By far the best field in the XI. , and probably as good as any Loretto ever had, covering a lot of ground, clean andsure with his hands, and having a really good return ; generally takes a " country place ," but can field anywhere ; a patient bat, with very fair defence , but developed a weakstroke to point towards the end of the season, whichcost h i mhis wicket on several occasions ; a strange, erratic , and somewhatsuccessful bowler. N. A. MʻLeod (1888 ) : Steadily improved in de- fence all the season , and latterly played several useful innings , but has very little power of making runs , owing mainly to his trick of tumbling about when batting ; a showy but uncertain field , being very fast on his legs , but seldom picking a ball up clean ; a moderate change bowler of a little over mediumpace, butwith nocommandof pitch . J. L. Henderson (1888 ) : Wasin the team for his wicket -keeping , and if his hands had kept sound all the season , would bave beenperhaps as good as any weever had here ; as a bat not to be relied on ; does not bowl. D. L. Evans (1887-8 ) : Aplucky and lucky bat, hitting out vigorously at most balls , and scoring very quickly , but a bad judge of a run ; a fair bowler , butnot as effective as last year ; a good field , but best in the country ; always lively and vigorous , and a good manon a losing side . G. J. Gibson (1888 ) : Only got into the team towards the end of the season , and that for his fielding , which is safe and good , but not brilliant , as he is too slow on his legs ; as a " tail " bat has done very well ; not a bowler . A. P. Smeaton (1888 ) : Hardly batted as well as had been hoped , being too easily bowled , especially by a "yorker ;" a very fair field behind the wicket , though a little slow and with a weak return ; bowls very slow round hand, sometimes with success . J. S. Paton (1888 ) : A very useful bat , with considerable power to keep his wicket up, though not a rapid maker of runs ; bowls slow round hand, and with some effect on a dead wicket; a fair field .
