Champain : Proved an excellent and successful captain ; a very fine bat, combining a good defence with great powers of punishing ; has a splendid off -drive , and has developed the art of pulling a short one with great effect ; a very fair wicket -keep , good field , and safe catch . W. Hodges : Plays with a very straight bat, and is possessed of remarkable patience and powers of defence ; has saved more than one match; apainstaking but somewhatslow field . *C. V. Davy: Aleft -handbatsman, withverypowerful cut andoff-drive ; always plays hard on the ball ; has bowled withconsiderable success (slow left). *L. T. Bigg: Bats in fine upright style , andhas madegreat improvement ; hits well to leg and the on; safe cover -point . *G. C. Swire : Hasgood defence , but does not use his strength ; very useful bats- m a non anywicket , but plays back too much; fair point and wicket -keeper . L.G. Mayers: A most punishing batsmannowthat he has got rid of some of his wildness , andhas been of great service ; bowls fast right , andwith consider- able success ; dashing field . *R. G. Thompson : A steady bat, with good on- drive ; first -class field . W. A. Baker : Hard-hitting bat, bowls left medium, with adistinct curl ; a safe catch . E. M. Young: Bowls fast right , round the wicket , and metwith great success on the fast wickets early in the season . L. H. Palmer: Verysteady bowler (left medium), successful at times ; has plenty of batting powerlatent , but seemed to despair of success ; moderate field . W . G . Thesiger : A steady bat , lacking scoring powers ; very straight bowler (right medium) ; improved field . 1 1
