Guy (Captain , 1888 ) : By far the best bat in the team, thoroughly deserves his place at the head of the averages ; splendid field anywhere. T. A. White (Captain 1889) : Has been mostvaluable to the team; both as a batsman and a bowler has great weight ; a sure , though tardy field . J. W. Aris : Muchimproved in batting ; played some very useful innings ; slow bowler, and slower field . F. W. Farrant : Rather a lucky bat; good field in the slips ; his bowling was not so successful as last year, but he had bad luck . T. W. Cook : A nice useful bat; very good field ; as a change bowler has got wickets whenbadly wanted. E. J. Nelson : Apretty but nervous bat ; fair field ; can bowl a muchappreciated lob . F. W. Waldock : As a bat lies low, but hits hard ; fast , straight , and easy bowler ; excellent field anywhere. G . L. Wilson : Wouldbe really a first -class bat if he could make runs; bowledwith some success ; innocent of over-exertion in the field . C. Philcox : Plays in good style , but too keen to score ; bowls a good ball nowand then; very active in the field . H. E. Philcox : As steady a bat as usual , but ill- ness and ill -luck prevented his being so valuable to the team as hitherto ; in later matches displayed unmistakable symptoms of lob bowling . W. Bury: Can bat, but had very few chances of showing his powers ; good field ; strongly recommendedbybatsmen as a change bowler. H. W . Plumptre : Should turn out a really goodleft -hand bowler ; has best bowling average ; his ideas of batting are as yet only primitive . M E R T O NC O L L E G E , O X F O R D . I n n s. Broke (Captain) : As a bowler has been veryuseful this year, but as a bat has not come off as expected ; made an ex- cellent and painstaking captain . G. K. Papillon : Has not played much for us
