Secretary , Geo. Goldsmith , 11 , Prince Albert Street , Brighton . W I T Honly one victory to their credit in a programme of twelve matches, it wouldbe difficult to find anything of a laudatory character to write in connec- tion with Sussex cricket . This year, too , it could hardly be urged that the eleven wasnot generally , with two exceptions , fairly represented . The excep- tions , though, were important ones , as Beanand Mr. Thomaswere only able to play once , and the loss of the excellent all -round cricket of the former , who was ill during practically the whole of the cricket season , was very severely felt-a very serious loss indeed to the team. Mr. Newham, though, was able to play regularly , and his batting was consistently good. Quaife , who on his form of 1887 bade fair to be one of the very best batsmen of the year, was not so succes- ful as was expected , andthough several of the team hadvery respectable averages , there was nothing very muchabove the average in the batting . Thesame, too, mightbe said of the bowling. Arthur Hide was generally effective , at times particularly so . Otherwise , though Humphreys' lobs played a very important part in the brilliant victory the county claimed over the Australians , the figures wereon moderately good, and the out-cricket of the Sussex eleven is still susceptible of great improvement.
