Surrey , 250. Hampshire, 103 and 58 ; total , 161 . (12) Surrey v. Australians. Oval, July 30 and 31 , and August.1 . Rain permitted of less than a day and a half's play, and, as a consequence , the matchwasleft unfinished , to the great disappointment of Surrey supporters , whowere hopeful that they would retrieve their previous defeat . W h e nthe game was stopped soon after luncheon on the first day , Surrey had lost six wickets for 92, and this number, thanks to some good cricket by Mr. Key(46) and Lohmann, they increased to 135 on the following afternoon . The ground hadnot as yet got difficult when the Australians wentin, but they madea poor show against Lohmann, Bowley, and Beaumont, and of 51 from the bat, Messrs . Turner (23) and Trott (14) contributed 37. Of the Australians not one was bowled. Onewas run out, and the other nine caught-three byAbel at short- slip , one by Lohmannin the same position , three by Henderson at third m a n, one byMr. Bowden at short -slip , and one at the wicket . In a minority of 83 , the Australians had just failed to save the follow on, and, as no play waspossible on the third day, the gamehad to be left drawn, the Australians , whohad eight wickets to fall , being still 50 behind . Surrey, 135. Australians , 52 and 33 (two wickets ) ; total , 85. Lohmann(1st inns . Australians ) O v e r s. 1 8 M a i d e n s. 8 R u n s. 2 4 (13) Surrey v. Leicestershire . Oval, August 23 and 24 . W i c k e t s. 5 With the exception of Mr. Trouncer in place of the captain (Mr. Shuter), Surrey played their full strength in this return match. Leicestershire started batting, and scored 67 for one wicket . Then followed a complete collapse , the remainingnine wickets falling for an additional 11 runs, L o h m a n ntaking eight of the ten batsmen for 36 runs . ForSurrey , whowere well got rid of for 180 , Mr. Bowdenbatted well for 59, and Mr. Trouncer showed good form for 46. Withfive Leicestershire batsmen out in their second innings for only 62, it seemed as if the match was as good as over . Mr. Crofts (61 ), however , joined Warren, (57), whohad been batting well from the commencementof the innings , andby capital cricket the pair added 105 runs for their partnership . Pougher (38 not out) assisted Mr. Crofts to add another 66 runs ,and to bring the aggregate to 207, or 107 for Surrey to get to win. Eighty minutes , however, sufficed for Mr. Bowden(not out 81) and M. Read(not out 20) to knock these off , and this left Surrey victorious by nine wickets . Surrey , 180 and 107 (one wicket ) ; total , 287 . Leicestershire , 78 and 207 ; total , 285. (14) Surrey v. Essex. Oval, August 30 and 31 , and September 1. Surrey, without Mr. Shuter , Mr. W. W. Read, Abel, and Lohmann, were able to defeat Essex in the return , though the latter madea decidedly better fight of it than in the earlier match. Essex wonthe toss , but no play was pos- sible on the first day, and on the second no one but Mr. Owen(36) madeany noteworthy contribution to the aggregate of 117. Surrey replied to this with 220, Henderson (56) batting well , as did Mr. Key (not out (0) and Mr. Bowden (38). Thanks to some mistakes in the field , Essex did muchbetter at the second time of asking . Messrs . Owen, Sewell , and Buxton singularly enough all scored 33, and these , with 28 from Mr. F. E. Rowe, caused the total to reach 202 .
