(1) Surrey v. Yorkshire. Oval, June 7 and 8. Asevere reverse for the Northerners , who did not show to advantage any timeduring the two days' play. Winningthe toss , Lord Hawkeelected to bat on a slowish wicket, but no one except Hall and Mr. Hill could makeany stand . Hall's 34 (not out) was a fine display under the circumstances , and he once more saw the whole of the side retire without being out himself . Beaumont's bowling wasvery successful ; he took eight wickets for 40 runs. Theground had dried considerably whenSurrey commencedbatting , with the result that runs came muchfaster . Mr. Key (50) and Abel (44) put on 88 for the second wicket , the twoReads 91 while they were together , andthen Mr. W . W .Read(103) and Mr. Bowden(70), both of w h o mplayed very fine cricket , fairly collared the Yorkshire bowling . Rain during Yorkshire's second innings was all against them, but still their batting was not up to its usual standard , and Surrey finally w o nbyaninnings and 117 runs . Surrey, 356. Yorkshire , 104 and 135 ; total , 2 3 9.
