James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1889

9 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (7) N o t t sv. Australians. Nottingham, June 4 and 5. TheAustralian captain , owing to an injured finger , was not able to play, and though he started , Mr. Jones was obliged very soon to leave the field , and give up his place to Mr. Lyons. Winningthe toss , Notts only madea moderate start , but a very useful stand on the fall of the third wicket by Messrs . Dixon (83) and Daft (31), whoput on 81 before they were separated , improved matters considerably ; and this , with some good cricket by Flowers (36) and Attewell (not out 22), enabled the county to reach avery respectable total of 215, of which 172hadbeen got by the four just named. O n the other hand, the Australians fared very badly against the bowling of Attewell and Barnes, and the distinc- tion of the highest aggregate fell to Mr. Jarvis , whoin the second innings got 3 5out of 39 whilehe wasin. Notts w o nb yeight wickets-a success in some measure due to the effective bowling of Attewell , whose ten wickets cost only 82runs. Notts , 215 and 38 (two wickets ) ; total , 253. Australians , 76 and 175 ; otal , 251 . (8) Notts v. Australians. Nottingham, August 16, 17, and 18. Mr. Turner, whohad not been at all well for a fortnight before , wasnot in anything like his best form, and under these circumstances the out-cricket of theAustralians suffered materially . H ebowled in all 46 overs for 75 runs with- out taking a wicket , and in the face of his great and continuous success through- out the tour this will show he was seen at his worst. TheNottingham batsmen hadconsequently a muchbetter opportunity for run-getting , andthe result was a large total of 441. N oless than seven of the eleven scored over 30, but the best performance wasthat of Gunn(91) and Barnes (90), whoput on 150 runs while they were together , both of them without a chance . Sight rain had affected the wicket whenit cameto the turn of the Australians to bat , and, as in the first match, Attewell bowled so well that the scoring all round was small , the highest aggregate being Bannerman's 36. The total of 441 by Notts was the highest score of a county against the Australians . Notts won easily by an innings and 199 runs. Notts, 441. Australians , 95 and 147; total , 242.
