THOUGHon paper Middlesex had a formidable batting side , the eleven did not showbyany means to the best advantage on the wetgrounds, and their record wasnot so good as might have been expected from the form shownin the pre- vious year. In several respects the cricket was very disappointing . Mr. A. J. Webbe, one of the most reliable batsmen as a rule whenthe pitch favours the bowler, failed to play up to expectations , and Mr. J. G. Walker, another good batunder difficulties , was only moderately successful . Mr. Stanley Scott proved himself to be, as usual , one of the safest run-getters in the eleven , but the best record of all was that of Mr. O'Brien , whose average of fifty was an exception- ally good performance , though he did only take part in nine innings . Decidedly the best feature , though , of Middlesex cricket last year was the remarkable success which attended Burton's slow bowling . Throughout the season he rarely proved ineffective , and his figures , which showed 79 wickets at an average cost of just over twelve runs , was one of the best of any bowler of the year. Mr. Buckland only played rarely a matter of great regret , as his all-round cricket wouldhave helped the team materially . In Mr. Bryant, Middlesex , how- ever, introduced a wicket -keeper very much above the average , and one w h o m w ehope will have a chance of proving still further his undoubted capacity .
