8 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. L A N C A S H I R E . OFFICERS FOR 1888.-President , Sir Humphreyde Trafford , Bart. Committee , A. N. Hornby, W. E. Openshaw, C. G. Hulton, E. B. Rowley, E. Challen- der, R. Walker, S. R. Platt , A. G. Steel , R. Gorton, A. Appleby, G. Walsh, E. Roper, A. F. Pope, Ernest Leese, O. P. Lancashire , and John Stanning . H o n. Secretary , S. H. Swire . Hon. Treasurer , J. McLaren. Assistant Secretary and Collector , F. Reynolds , 26, Barton Arcade, Manchester . THOUGHin point of actual wins in the more important matches Lancashire's record was not as good as those of Kent or Yorkshire , its eleven were on public form certainly entitled to a place quite in the forefront of county cricket . Theplay was at times perhaps a little uneven, but in more than onew a y the Lancashire eleven were not in the best of luck. Mr. A. G. Steel w a s unable to help in one of what are called the first -class fixtures , and Robinson, whowas at the head of the batting averages in 1887 , owing to illness could play little , and then, out of practice , with comparatively little success . Thewet wickets prevalent , too, did not seem to suit either Mr. Hornby or Barlow , two of the great mainstays of the team in past years , and though considerable allowance must be made in the fact that the eleven was often by no means representative , still the batting washardly so reliable or so dangerous as it had been. T h efast bowlerso m u c hwantedh a d not been found, and the bulk of the work was done by Briggs , Barlow, and Watson a trio of bowlers not tobe surpassed in a county team. Mention should be made of Lancashire's victories over the Australians at Manchester , as well as over Surrey at the Oval, and it is also worthy of remark that not one of the extra matches was lost.
