James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1889
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1888. 8 3 praise . Yorkshire's second display was very poor, Martin and Wright disposing of them for 75 in an hour and forty minutes . With148 to win, Kent started fairly well , as they had obtained 53 of these for four wickets on the second night . Rainon the third day, however , made the wicket very difficult , and though Mr. K e m phit hard for 20, and Mr. Patterson played excellent cricket for or 32, the homecounty were 51 runs short at the finish . Yorkshire , 192 and 75 ; total , 267. Kent, 120 and 96; total , 216. (16) K e n t υ. Australians . Canterbury , August 6, 7, and 8. A slow wicket , and as a consequence run -getting much below the average of Canterbury . The highest of the four innings , indeed , only showed a total of 152, and the best individual score of the match wasBonnor's 43 in the Australians ' second innings . For once a novel experience on the St. Lawrence ground-the bowlers had things very much in their ownhands . The Australian pair, Turner and Ferris , as usual under such circumstances , were seen to great advantage ; the former was credited with ten Kent wickets at a cost of only 69 runs . S. P. Jones madehis first appearance in the Australian team after his severe illness , and proved to be the highest scorer in their first innings with 24 not out. Woottonwas left out of the Kenteleven , not altogether wisely , as manywere of opinion . The Australians wonby 81 runs . Australians , 116 and 152; total , 268. Kent, 107 and80; total , 187.
