K E N Twas singularly unsuccessful in 1887 , and only one victory was recorded in the fourteen matches played with the leading counties . The failure , though , was due in a great measure to circumstances over which the executive had no control . In the earlier matches the elevens were never representative , and, to makematters worse, a most unfortunate accident deprived them, for a greater part of the summer, of the valuable services of G. G. Hearne, one of the most, if not the most, useful all -round cricketer in the team. Lord Harris , too , owing to his Parliamentary duties , was not available until August, and, in addition , it was not until the later fixtures that the county was able to claim the services of Messrs . W. H. Patterson , Rashleigh , and Marchant to bring the team to its full strength . On several occasions the Kent eleven proved their ability to play an uphill game with distinct credit , and when properly represented the county had an undoubtedly formidable side . On the hard wickets of 1887 , however , although Wootton bore the brunt of the attack well , the bowling did not show any great sting , and the want of a good fast bowler , such as Mr. Stanley Christopherson was a few years ago , was much felt , Resultsof M a t c h e s.
