6 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. The chief features of the match were the batting of Mr. C. D. Buxtonfor Essex , and the bowling of Cropper for Derbyshire . Mr. Buxton was responsible for 51 out of 94 from the bat in the second innings of Essex. Cropper took ten Essex wickets at an average cost of seven and a half runs . Derbyshire wonby seven wickets . Derbyshire had all the worst of the early part of the game, and indeed until almost the close of the second innings the oddsseemedto be all in favourof Leicestershire . W h e nthe sixth wicket fell the Derbyshire eleven were only fifteen runs on, and their chance seemed small enough. The later batsmen, Storer , Walton, and Slater , however, scored freely off the bowling of Pougher, Rylott , and the other trundlers of Leicestershire , and the last four wickets added as manyas 175 runs. Leices- tershire were left with 191 to win, but the task proved too muchfor them, and Derbyshire gained a creditable victory by 74 runs. Leicestershire , 216 and 116 ; total , 332. Derbyshire , 127 and279 ; total , 406. (9) Derbyshire v. Essex. Leyton , August 22 and 23. Derbyshire had a little in hand throughout , and wonin the end with eight wickets in reserve . Chatterton (58) and Davidson (52) enabled the Derbyshire eleven to get a good start , and the two professionals , whoput on 110 for the fourth wicket, wereresponsible for one-half of the runs got. Mr. C. D. Buxton (40and43) played good cricket for Essex each time , but no one else except Bas- tow, who got 49 in the second innings , offered any serious resistance to the Derbyshire bowlers , and the display generally was only moderate . Bray, who played for Kent some years ago, made his first appearance for Essex on this occasion . Derbyshire , 203 and 61 (two wickets ) ; total , 264. Essex, 115 and 148; total , 263.
