Jervis , Quorndon , Derby ; S. Richardson , 1, Bab- ington Lane, Derby. T H E ill -success which has attended the Derbyshire eleven during the last few years was as conspicuous as ever in 1887. Only three of the leading counties- to wit , Yorkshire , Lancashire , and Surrey were found ready to make fixtures withthe Derbyshire Club, and all the six matches played resulted disastrously for them. O nthe other hand, the Derbyshire eleven , it is worthy of remark, wereable to beat Essex twice and Leicestershire once , so that their ability to morethan hold their ownwith some of the most prominent shires not quite in the first grade was proved . Against Surrey at the Oval, too, the representatives of Derbyshire showed excellent all -round form , and had it not been for a goodly amountof badluck towards the close , might have possibly won. Indeed, with a little better fortune and perhaps a slight improvement in the management of the team, there is no reason whyDerbyshire should not occupy a better position .
