James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1888
THE MARYLEBONECLUB IN 1887. 5 3 (14) M.C.C. a n d G r o u n dv. Yorkshire. Scarborough , September 1, 2, and 3. Thoughthere was only a difference of five runs between the two elevens on the completion of an innings , Marylebone were seen to advantage in the latter part of the game, and but for rain would, in all probability , have w o n. In spite of wet on each of the first two days , the scoring was above the average , and each side got very near the third hundred. To the Yorkshire total of 291 , Peel (71) , Ulyett (64), and Lee (55) were the principal contributors , and the three professionals were answerable for 190 of 279 from the bat . M.C.C. had lost six wickets for 159 on the second night , but some fine batting on the following morning by Messrs . Paravicini (70) and Vernon (32) entirely altered the aspect of the game. W h e nthe Yorkshiremen went in a second time Mr. Stoddart , not hitherto knownas a bowler , proved surprisingly successful , and Mr. Nepean and he dismissed Yorkshire for 94 runs , without a change. Rain caused a delay of forty minutes before Marylebone, who had 100 runs to get to win in eighty - five minutes , were able to go in. In the forty -five minutes 46were got with only one batsman out , so that the drawwas not in Yorkshire's favour. Yorkshire , 291 and 94 ; total , 385. M.C.C. and Ground, 286 and 46(one wicket ) ; total , 332. Mr. Stoddart (2ndinningsYorkshire) 1 2 R u n s. 3 3 Overs. M a i d e n s. 2 4 B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S .
