T H EM A R Y L E B O N EC L U BI N 1887. 5 1 several hardly knownas active cricketers to the public of to -day, among them the Rev. C. G. Laneand Mr.V. E.Walker, both of w h o mhave been out of important cricket for years . Thebowling, though, of the Juniors was not of a very high order , and some good batting was shown by the Veterans , particularly byMr. J. F. Leese , a prominent Lancashire amateur some fifteen years since , who made 62 out of 131 while at the wickets in the first innings , Mr. I. D. Walker, Rev. S. C. Voules, and Col. N. W .Wallace . The Veterans did well to get five wickets onthe opposite side , including that of W. G. Grace, downfor 100, but after- wards Mr. Webbe(104) gave thema lot of trouble . Atthe close the Veterans were203 runs on with twelve wickets still in hand. Veterans , 306 and 175 (five wickets) ; total , 481. М.С.С. , 278 . (9) M.C.C.a n dG r o u n dv. Notts. Lord's , June 23, 24, and 25. Notts, whowere without Shrewsbury, Scotton , and Mr. H. B. Daft, after naving considerably the worst of the first hands , played up with great pluck , a n dwereable to beat a moderateeleven of M.C.C. with a little before. A t the end of aninnings they were 96 to the bad, but fortunately Mr. Dixon (89), Attewell (76), and Flowers (62) were all in form whenthe County wentin again . The three batsmen named contributed 227out of 270, and the last five wickets were only responsible for the addition of sixteen runs to the total . Mr. Dixon, whohad not played for Notts for some time, was three hours at the wickets , and his batting was quite the best on the side . Marylebone at the close had 175 to win, but Shacklock bowled with such effect that the Hon. M. B. Hawke, who scored 40 and 53 in the match, alone madeover thirty runs, andthe side were out for 146. Shacklock's bowling was the feature of the game. H etook eight of the ten wickets in the second innings of M.C.C. for only 32 runs-exceptionally good figures . Notts w o nby28 runs. Though their batting was very creditable , the bowling of the University eleven wasnot good enough to give them a very great chance, and as the result showed , it was quite unequal to the task required . Eight batsmen got double figures in the first innings of M.C.C. , and in the second Mr. W. G. Grace performed on the Cambridge bowlers to such a tune that 178 runs were gotfor the loss of only one wicket . The University were 117 runs behind at the end of an innings , but they played up most creditably when they went in again , and Mr. Sutthery in particular showed to advantage , getting 72 in excellent style . At the close Marylebone had 178 runs to get to win, and through the brilliant batting of Mr. W. G. Grace , who made 116 not out in twohours and fifty minutes without a chance, the numberwere made for the loss of only one batsman . Pougher , in the first innings of Cambridge , got three wickets-those of Messrs . Orford , Hale, and Toppin-with successive balls . Twelve batted on each side , but only eleven fielded . M.C.C. wonby ten wickets . M.C.C. , 260 and 178 (one wicket ) ; total , 438. Cambridge University , 143 and 294 ; total , 437 . F. G. Ford (1st innings M.C.C.) ........ Overs. Maidens. R u n s.
