Sugg , both of whomplayed subsequently for other counties , and Mr. Cochrane, was only poorly represented , andmadebut a moderate show against a strongish batting side of M.C.C. It wasa bowler's match throughout , and the highest of the four innings , it will be seen , did not reach 140. George Hearne (70 not out) and Chatterton (32 not out) were both seen to advantage for their respective sides in the first hands, and the former's batting wasdecidedly the best feature of the match. Hewent in third wicket down for M.C.C. , and was not out at the finish of the innings , having scored 70 out of 110 while he was in. Pougher, of Leicestershire , and Rawlin, of Yorkshire , made their first appearance for the Marylebone Club in this match, Hulmeand Bagshawfor Derbyshire . M.C.C. won by 145 runs. N. Hornbywere both on the side of the Club, and the latter was not seen to better advantage during the season . In the first innings he was responsible for 105 out of 213 , and altogether for 173 out of 335 made by M.C.C. from the bat a very fine performance . George Hearne (18 and 51), Mr. J. N. Tonge(40 and 23), and Alec Hearne (33 and 13) were the chief scorers for the County. Wootton's bowling on the second morning was particularly successful . In twenty -six overs hetook seven Marylebone wickets at a cost of only 37 runs . Walter Hearne madehis first appearance for Kent on this occasion . M.C.C. won by seven wickets . Avery creditable victory for Sussex . Marylebone , though Mr. W. G. Grace wasplaying , had only a weak batting side , but the County , on the other hand, was poorly represented in the absence of Messrs . F. M. Lucas , W. Newham, G. Brann, E. J. McCormick, and F. Thomas. Rain interfered materially with the game, and the scoring on both sides was below the average. The chief feature of the gamewas the all -round cricket of Mr. W. G. Grace in the first hands. Commencingthe innings of M.C.C. , he wasnot out at the finish , having scored 81 out of 118 from the bat . Hewas in altogether two hours and a quarter , and without , until just before the end, a bad hit . In addition he helped to dismiss nine of the ten batsmen out in the first innings of the County, seven from his ownbowling, besides catching two more. Holland played for Sussex for the first time on this occasion . Sussex wonbyfour wickets . Sussex, 119 and 137 (six wickets ) ; total , 256. M.C.C. and Ground, 128 and 125 ; total , 253 . O v e r s.
