James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1888
2 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. in anyposition he was equally at home. A ninjury to his thumb crippled Barnes about the middle of the tour, and as he had not only been batting , but bowling well, the effect of his loss cannot well be overestimated . N e wSouth Wales beat them twice on sticky wickets , but otherwise there was no check during the trip . At all points they were undoubtedly a formidable combination , but if anything , their out cricket wasthe best feature of the play, and, in proof of their ability to stop runs, it maybe remarked that only twoinnings of over ahundred were got against them-by Horan, 117 for Victoria , on November 6th ; andby H. F. Boyle , for Eighteen of Sandhurst , on March 15th . Thefull scores of the matches and general statistics of the tour follow :- F I R S TM A T C H . English Eleven v. Fifteen of SouthAustralia .
