A useful fast bowler ; always accurate , and very dangerous whenthe wicket helps him at all ; muchimproved in fielding ; wasvery use- ful for the Countylast year. SCOTT , S. W. A thoroughly sound and dependable bat, also hitting well all round ; nearly always comes off for the County ; a moderate field . STODDART, A. E. Proved himself last year one of the best amateur batsmen, combining powerand prettiness in his style ; has no superior as an out-field . Thehero of the longest score on record . (M.C.C. Australian Team, 1887-88 .) STUDD, G. B. (Eton and Cambridge). Adangerous bat, hitting very freely ; a magnificent field ; in this department has no superiors . (Hon. Ivo Bligh's Australian Team, 1882-83 .) THORNTON, C. I. (Eton and Cambridge) . Still gives an occasional glimpse of his wonderful hitting powers, but never plays for the County. VERNON, G. F. (Rugby) . Hits with great vigour , and scores very fast ; very fine out -field , with a sure pair of hands. (Hon. Ivo Bligh's Australian Team, 1882-83 . ) (M.C.C. Australian Team, 1887-88 . ) W A L K E R, J. G. (Loretto and Oxford). Plays for Middlesex by residence . A sound and careful batsman, and most reliable run-getter , possessing the head and judgment of a veteran ; a safe field at point ; successor to the brilliant P e a r s o n. WEBBE, A. J. (Harrowand Oxford). A batsman with excellent defence , cut- ting very smartly ; one of the very best bats in England on a difficult wicket; a safe field . Captainin 1885 and1886. W E L M A N, F. T. Has gone off in his wicket -keeping , catches well , but is slow at stumping ; moderate bat. S O M E R S E T S H I R E . BASTARD , E. W. (Sherborne and Oxford ). Very good slow left -hand bowler , possessing great commandover the ball . CHALLEN, J. B. Plays in good style , especially on off -side , but rather unlucky last year ; very quick and safe in the field . CLAPP , A. E. A fine bat, hitting well to leg ; has come on very much this year ; fair change bowler ; good field awayfrom the wicket . Fox, H. F. A first -class bat against any bowling ; plays with great judgment , and is a sure scorer ; painstaking and hard -working field . HEWETT, H. T. (Harrowand Oxford). Could not play till late in the season owing to an injured hand; fine free left -handed bat, though somewhatun- certain ; very good point . MURDOCK, E. G. Asteady bat, andgood field . NEWTON, A. E. (Eton and Oxford). A first -class wicket -keeper , standing well up to the fastest bowling ; very useful bat, generally making runs when wanted; safe field anywhere. (M.C.C. Australian Team, 1887-88 .) NEWTON, S. C. (Cambridge) . Brilliant field anywhere, especially at cover -point ; good reliable bat. ROE, W. N. (Cambridge ). Good bat, with great punishing powers ; useful slow bowler; brilliant field . Ross, H. Punishing bat, and playing the gamethoroughly ; seems to have re- coveredhis old form; quickin the field . SAINSBURY, E. Captain in 1886. A good bat, combining great patience with hard hitting ; has highest average for his County; often successful as a lobb o w l e r. SPENCER, T. A steady bat, with good defence ; fine field , andsure catch .
