HEREWITHWe give the figures of the most successful exponents of the game in 1887. The grounds, it maybe stated , at the outset were all in favour of the batsmen, and run-getting in consequence was considerably above the average . It was essentially a batsman's year , and the scoring was on several occasions very high . Arthur Shrewsbury and Mr. W. G. Grace stood out, however, in bold relief . Shrewsbury's performances were phenomenal , only being equalled by Mr. Grace in the best of his manysuccessful seasons , 1876. Eight times in all he scored over a hundred runs, and his consistently brilliant batting throughout the summerentitled him to be considered the best bat of the day. Mr. W. G. Grace's success was remarkable , considering that he has taken partin important matches for nearly a quarter of a century . Evennow, after twenty- three years of hard work, he has no superior as an all -round cricketer . B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . T i m e s M o s ti n I n n s. notout. R u n s. a nI n n s. Average.
