Ashworth : A fair bat, playing slow bowling especially well, can generally be depended upon for runs ; a splendid field in the country, andsometimesuseful as a changebowler. A . C. S. Barchard: Asteady bat, with, at present , not very taking style , but will nodoubt improve ; hasplayed some very useful innings ; a very fair field at cover -point . *T. B. A. Clarke : A hard-hitting bat, but without much defence ; a fair field at point or in the country ; sometimes bowls well . *J. St. F. Fair (Capt.) : Possesses good de- fence, with plenty of hitting power, and is a better bat than his average would imply; a fairly good slow, round-armbowler ; safe catch , but slow in the field ; workedhard as captain , and took every pains to secure the best eleven . F. S. Jackson : Agood bat, with fine free style , hitting well all round ; a very good fast bowler onhis day, coming in from the off , and a capital field anywhere; always does his best . A. C. MacLaren : Avery good , steady bat, watching the ball well ; plays equally well all round except for a rather weakstroke to short leg; at Lord's played two fine innings ; a safe catch ; is still very young, and should improve immensely. J. A. MacLaren (Captain for 1888 ) : A moderate bat, with a good stroke on the off -side , and considerable driving powers , but does not play quite straight ; as a bowler , was very successful at the beginning of the season , but fell off later on ; a poor field ; a thoroughly painstaking cricketer , whocan always be relied upon to do his best . N. Ramsay: Agood, steady, medium-pace bowler , breaking from the off ; would bat better if he gave moreattention to it ; a capital field whenawake. *E. G. Raphael : Onhis day a fine , hard-hitting bat, but rather uncertain ; a very good field at mid-off , anda moderate change bowler. * W. M. Torrens : W a sprevented from playing during the busiest part of the season from an injured hand ; a good bat on a fast wicket, scoring fast whenset ; has a fine stroke on the off -side ; a moderate wicket-keeper ; his absence was a serious loss to the eleven , as he was the only wicket-keeper , and a consistent scorer . H. D. Watson : A good bat, hitting well all round; scores quickly , punishing loose bowling well ; bowls very fair lobs ; should try andbe quicker in the field .
