1 3 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. bowler , and, if steady , would be far more so, but is generally expensive on account of the number of loose balls he bowls ; bats left -hand, and has a good defence , but not so successful this season . H. Bateman Champain : A very fine school bat, and has this year fulfilled the promise he showed last season ; plays in sound and vigorous style , and with good judgment, is always hard on the ball , and is a powerful hitter to leg and in front of cover -point , seldom fails to take advantage of a loose one ; good field at point . P. A. Turner : Excellent left -hand bat, andhas a very good defence ; hits hard to the off , and generally on the ground ; like Champain , he was in his best formthroughout the season , and it is seldom that a school possesses two bats of such merit ; a smart and hard- working field at cover , and plays the gamekeenly. *E. T. Heaven : A very useful bowler, mediumpace, straight , and with at times a considerable break ; bowled very well against Marlborough , when his batting was also of great service ; as a bat was disappointing ; plays sometimes very well in a free , upright style , with some very good strokes , but is rather wanting in confidence ; a good short -slip . W. M. Brown: Avery useful bat, and has a goodaverage for the season ; on a hard ground plays in a free , taking style , his driving being especially clean and good, but is somewhattame in his back play ; is a very good field in the country , with a good return . *C. T. Smith : Left- hand bat, with good defence ; a useful first man; moderate wicket -keeper . *C. A. R. Gordon : Left-hand mediumbowler, and proved very serviceable during the season ; ahard hitter , often makinga useful contribution towards the end of an innings , noticeably in the Marlborough match and v. M.C.C. at Lord's . W. W. Bignell : Promising all -round cricketer ; a useful bowler , fast medium, with high delivery ; very fair bat, and excellent field . W. Hodges : A careful bat, with a good defence , plays correctly but somewhatcramped, hits to leg well ; has plenty of cricket in him, and ought to develop into a fine bat with morestrength and experience . *H. R. Christie : A fair bat, plays in nice form on fast ground andagainst fast bowling ; not so good against slows , as he plays toomuchat the pitch , and in one style ; played a good innings v. Clifton ; very fair field . P. C. Clowes : Bowls fast , with a high delivery , successful at times ; wants strength at present , but should makea good bowler in time ; moderate bat, capable of improvement anddevelopment ; very fair field .
