James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1888

1 0 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS ' ANNUAL. the ordinary standard , at others as disappointing . Some of their later per formances were indeed phenomenal, and their scores against Kent at Canterbury , and Lancashire at Bradford , not to mention those in the contests with Cheshire , were unmistakable proofs of the great strength of the Yorkshire team in batting . Ulyett's return to form assisted themmaterially in this respect , and in addition F. Lee, whohad in the previous year unexpectedly failed to maintain his promise as a batsman, reappeared in the eleven , and with markedsuccess , proving himself to be one of the most likely run-getters in the eleven . Hall, too , wasthe samereliable and painstaking bat, rarely failing to come to the rescue of his side whena real effort was made, and Mr. Hawkedid good service both in the managementof the team as well as a batsman. Peel , too, rarely failed to get runs, and Wade, if he hardly fulfilled the expectations formed of him in 1886 as a bowler , on the hard wickets of 1887 earned his place in the team as a bat. It was in the out- cricket of the eleven that Yorkshire was lacking . The bowling, though there was plenty of variety , did not show any bright particular star , and the fielding was at times very uncertain . There wasreally nothing very formidable in the Yorkshire attack , and at present what defects there are in Yorkshire cricket seem to be in the stopping rather than in the making of r u n s.
