Ricketts were all playing for the county , Surrey was able to put a fairly strong eleven of amateurs into the field . The Canadians went in first , but with the exception of Allan (30), none of them got over twenty . Messrs . F. W. Bush (65) and W. G. Wyld(57) nearly reached the Canadian total before they were parted , and 130 wasup whenthe first wicket fell . Afterwards Messrs . L. A. Shuter (102) and 'Trollope (69) scored well , and the latter hit in fine style . Though in a minority of 291, the Canadians , whenthey went in again , showed to great advantage , and in the two hours left made149 runs for the loss of only two batsmen. Ofthese , Mr. D. W. Saunders contributed 71 not out an excellent display of batting in everysense. S U S S E X . OFFICERS FOR 1887.-President , The Earl of Sheffield . THESummaryof Sussex cricket in 1887 cannot by anypossible argument be re- garded as satisfactory . It was at the same time by no meansdiscouraging , and on several important occasions the eleven showed very creditable all-round cricket . Onthe hard wickets of last summer, though, the bowling did not seem to have much sting , and this notwithstanding that Mr. C. A. Smith , who acted as captain-anda right good captain too was generally successful . The bat- ting, whenthe eleven was well represented , was strong , although it wouldhave beenmaterially strengthened had Messrs . Newham, F. M. Lucas, andF. Thomas, been able to play more frequently . In Quaife Sussex has, without a doubt, the best youngprofessional batsman of the day, andhe played such consistently good cricket throughout last season , that the public is justified in expecting him to develop into one of the very best players of the day.
