A sat Lord's , the Players wonthe toss , and this detracted still more from the interest of the match. Mr. Nepean, the Oxford slow bowler, quickly dis- posed of Shrewsbury and Gunn, but Ulyett , Maurice Read, and Bates hit well , though the last -namedwas missed more than once. Heavyrain stopped the gameon the second afternoon , andfurther reduced anyoutside chance the Gen- tlemen might have had. Messrs . W. G. Grace andBuckland played good cricket in the second innings , but Barnes ' bowling , helped by the ground , proved too muchfor the majority of the team, and the Players had an easy victory by an innings and 17 runs .
