James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1888
9 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERSA N N U A L. has done much, as no one can deny , to develop cricket . Nor can it be said that Surrey's attainment of the first place was in anywaya fluke , or the result of any great amount of luck . On the contrary , it was only gained after very hard work and in the face of, in the latter part of the season in particular , great diffi- culties . The eleven had, indeed , a very heavy programmeto carry out, and to some it was possibly a surprise that they played up so well until the last . In estimating their performances , too, it must not be forgotten that they were seriously handicapped in the later fixtures by the loss of Mr. W. E. Roller , Jones , and Beaumont, three of their most reliable bowlers , and that on somefew occasions they suffered severely from the absence of Wood, their regular wicket- keeper . All things considered , the season wasa remarkable one, and no one could grudge the Surrey eleven the proud distinction they gained as the best county of the year. That this success was dueto the excellent feeling which animated every memberof the teamwill be admitted by those who composed it we feel sure . Theythemselves , too, would be the first to admit that the untiring energy of their captain has been one of the greatest factors in the regainment of their old position , and indeed Surrey cricketers cannot appreciate too highly the ines- timable services Mr. John Shuter has rendered byhis unswerving loyalty to the county.
