Thefirst match between the counties , and, as it proved, one attended with unsatisfactory results for the hometeam. Kent, winning the toss , went in first , and only two of the eleven failed to reach double figures , though Mr. W. H. Patterson (84), Alec Hearne (50), and Mr. F. M. Atkins (47) were re- sponsible for considerably more than one-half of the aggregate . Essex in going in second had the worst of the wicket , and the bowling of Martin andWootton was so well supported bythe field , that Kent had a very long lead throughout . This return matchwas played at Tonbridge in place of the original county fixture against Derbyshire , and ended, as in the first meeting, in a hollow victory for Kent. Essex , going in first on a soft wicket , made a poor show against the bowling of Wootton and Martin, whodismissed them for 90 runs . Againstthis Kentaccumulated264, of which Mr. W .H. E s s e xdidm u c hbetterintheir second attempt, though they just failed to save the innings defeat . The best show on the side was that of Bastow, who played excellent cricket for 58 (n o t out).
