Acreditable victory for Derbyshire , the more so that they had all the worst of the earlier stages of the game. Essex, whowent in first , thanks chiefly to a lucky score of 60 by Mr. C. D. Buxton, were able to reach a creditable total of 218 - asumwhich proved sufficient to force their opponents to follow on. Derbyshire , inaminority of 100 runs , madea muchbetter showwhenthey went in a second time-a result chiefly due to the good play of Cropper (36 and 52) andW. Chat- terton (48 and 32), and the assistance of the later batsmen, whohelped to put on 60 runs for the last three wickets . Essex at the close had 113 to win, but none of the eleven except Mr. W.Francis could do muchwith the bowling of Cropper and Davidson, and he was credited with 31 out of 55 from the bat. Mr. G. G.Walkerwas unable to play for Derbyshire , and his bowling was muchmissed . Derbyshire wonby46 runs . Derbyshire , 118 and 212 ; total , 330. Essex , 218 and 66 ; total , 284 . Pickett (2nd inns.
