Mr. Whitbywas awayon the second day, andin his absence the University bowling, never strong , was weaker than ever. A s a consequence Oxford had a long outing , and some of the Marylebone batsmenscored fast . Of a total of 387 from the bat, Messrs . Vernon, Webbe, and Russel contributed as manyas 304. Mr. Vernon's hitting was the feature of the match. Out of the last 225 runs he was responsible for 160-a brilliant , if fortunate , display of powerful hitting . In his figures were twenty-two fours . Messrs . Page (65) and Buckland (24 and 77) were the best contributors for Oxford . The match was drawn. Abrilliant victory for a strong eleven representing the Marylebone Club. Neither side made a good commencement, but some capital cricket by Mr. J. G. Walker(55) on the one hand, and a determined stand by Grimshaw(61) and Peel (30), both of w h o mhit well at the close of the Yorkshire innings , caused the first hands to realise respectable totals . Thoughsix wickets were downin the second innings of M.C.C. with only 72 on, some fine cricket by Messrs . J. G. Walker (65) and Paravicini (60), who put on 93 for the eighth wicket , entirely altered the game. Yorkshire went in a second time, with only two hours anda half left for play, and 246 to win. Everything seemed in favour of a draw, but Barnes and Mr. Grace bowled with such effect that no change was required , and the Marylebone Eleven were able to claim a highly creditable victory by 133 runs .
