(Harrow and Cambridge ). A very fine batsman , playing in splendid , upright style ; is a magnificent and hard-working field anywhere; bowls slow round-arm, and is a very rising cricketer . FOWLER, G. (Clifton and Oxford ). Has hardly come up to the expectations formed while at school , where he was a really good fast bowler and hard hit- ting bat; with care will , however, makea good cricketer . FOWLER, H. (Clifton and Oxford ). A tremendous hitter , and should be more useful to his County, but is unable to play often . FRANCIS, W. A good bat, with a decided style of his own; has been very successful during the past season , but would makemanylonger scores were he to be more patient ; a splendid and most energetic field . OWEN, H. G. (Maldon). Avery steady and sound batsman , with strong defence ; generally scores in County matches, andplays good bowling well. GREEN, C. E. (Uppingham and Cambridge ). The Captain of the eleven ; in his day a very fine batsman, and still retains much of his old form ; a good field , and thorough judge of the game; the mainstay of Essex cricket SEWELL, R. P. Is full of cricket , and bats in very taking style ; wouldmakea Do very fine player had he more patience ; is a very fine field , and should makea goodbowler, having a very good delivery . STEVENS , F. H. (Felstead ). A very good bat to fast bowling , but was unlucky during the past season ; a splendid out-field , and very energetic ; bowls slowround-a r m, sometimeswithsuccess . Played well against the Colts , but was hardly a success when tried for the County at the commencement of the B : s e a s o n . FAIRBANKS , W. (Clifton and Cambridge ). Useful all round , being a neat bat and good field ; plays little first -class cricket now. FRANCIS , GUY(Cheltenham ). A useful all -round cricketer ; fair bat . GARNE, W . H. Goodbat and field ; promising cricketer . GRACE, E. M. Still a very effective bat, with a good eye for hitting ; plays in a style of his own; a splendid field . GRACE, W. G. Still one of the very best batsmen of the day; hits all round freely , and times the ball with extraordinary precision ; bowls with great success , having a high delivery , and varying his pace and pitch with great judgment; a brilliant field anywhere, and never loses interest in the game. GREENE, A. D. (Clifton and Oxford ). A steady bat and good field . GRIFFITHS , E. L. (Rossall ). A very steady bat ; a fine field , and sure catch . HALEHAROLD(Cambridge). A promising cricketer ; was very useful as a 6 bowler on occasions last year ; steady and improving bat. LEATHAM, A. E. (Cambridge ). Agood field close to the wicket , but not safe in the long -field ; bowls left round medium. MOBERLY, W. O. (Rugby and Oxford ). A first -class bat, drives with great power , and hitting well all round ; a brilliant field ; plays little first -class cricketn o w. PEAKE, E. (Marlborough and Oxford ) . At times a very dangerous fast bowler ; hits h a r d. PULLEN, W. W. F. A fine bat , with a capital stroke just in front of point ; good field ; unable to play for the County last year. RADCLIFFE OCTAVIUS GOLDNEY. A great acquisition to the County ; a safe and reliable bat, anduseful change bowler (slow round), with considerable break.
