1 7 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. MERCHISTONELEVENIN 1886.-*H. P. Inglis (Capt.) : Goodbat; hits hard and straight whenset , but too nervous and over -anxious at starting ; a brilliant point , andhas occasionally taken the wickets with success ; hastaken great pains in his capacity as captain . D. C. Greenlees : Hasthe best style in the eleven as a bat ; hits well all round, especially on the off-side ; whenset , makesruns very fast ; a disappointing field . *H. N. Loncy : Avery careful and painstaking bat; has proved of great value to his side on several occasions by his steady defence ; a fairly safe field , and useful change bowler. F. C. Jones : Perhaps the best bat in the eleven , certainly the most successful ; has scored consistently , with goodhitting powers, and safe defence ; has an advantage over most of the eleven in being free from all nervousness ; safe , sometimes brilliant field , and good wicket -keeper . W. J. Reid : Improved considerably in batting towards the end of the season , but should play a more careful game; fair field ; as a bowler , has not fulfilled the expectations formed at the beginning of the term. H. M. Gray: Thebest bowler in the eleven ; keeps a very even length , with consider- able break from the off , and very rarely bowls a downright bad ball ; his re- cord of 101 wickets for a little over eight runs apiece is distinctly good ; poor bat; moderate field . C. E. Dunlop Plays with a good straight bat, hitting well to leg ; has scored several very useful innings ; smart field at short leg . *Т. К. Wilson : Careful , but disappointing bat ; ought to makemuchmore use of his height ; is particularly weakon the leg -side ; painfully slow in the field . J. G. Macnairn : Has bowled with considerable success , improving every match ; has natural break fromthe leg, butis apt to get short at times; fair bat andfield . *G. M. Brown: Medium-pace, erratic bowler ; occasionally gets in a very good ball ; hasfallen off rather latterly ; moderate bat, should try and cure himself of his flourish , and play straighter ; slow in the field . W. A. Hutcheson : Hits very hard at every kind of bowling indiscriminately , and generally knocks up runs ; has bowled (slow) occasionally with some success ; fair field , and good thrower. J. L. Grant (12th m a n) : W h e nhe gains more confidence will make a goodandcareful bat; safe field .
