Jones : M a d ea goodcaptain ; at times a brilliant bat to fast bowling, with a good stroke on the off -side ; fielded well at point . *F. H. Gresson : Perhaps the most useful m a nin the eleven ; his average was the highest , but his bowling did not quite come up to the expecta- tions formed of it last year ; a capital field in most places . F. J. N. Thesiger (Capt. for 1887) : A steady and fairly successful bowler ; will makea good bat next season if he candevelop more defence , as he has plenty of hitting power. H. Gibson : Bats in good style , but he was somehowor another unsuccessful last season ; a useful bowler. V. F. Leese : Looks as if he might some daybecome a really good bat, at present wants more strength and confidence ; should pay attention to his fielding . *H. Lyon : A good wicket -keep, always quick and generally safe ; could hit hard, and sometimes played in good style . *P. C. Joy : Agood bat, patient , but wanting more hitting power; a good field . W. H. Leese : Hassome good strokes on the off -side , must learn how to play back; a moderate field . W.G. Clegg : Hits hard , but has no defence ; can bowl at times adifficult ball . F. E. Johnson : Afast and bumpybowler, but has not yet got sufficient commandof the ball ; a hard hitter , but rugged in style . J. H. Weatherby : Has the making of a good bat , and cuts neatly ; slow in the field .
