James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1887

1 5 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. RADLEYELEVEN IN 1886.-G. R. Theobald (Capt) : Played a good innings v. Bradfield , but has been generally unsuccessful with the bat ; bowled well latterly ; a good field and catch anywhere . *R. H. Moss : A first -rate fast over -hand bowler , with plenty of work, and has been very successful , as his analysis proves ; has improved very much as a bat ; hits very hard, and is muchstronger in defence . C. B. Peachey : Agood field and fair change bowler , but is far too eager to make runs at once , and hence his comparative failure as a bat ; too fond of hitting wildly at nets , whereby he contracts faults which comeout in matches . *L. Byass : Has disappointed us greatly , having quite lost his last year's form ; has bowled fairly once or twice ; rather slow in the field . * T. R. Spyers : Decidedly improved as a bat, having a very good off- drive , though still rather weak on the leg -side ; played very consistent steady cricket through the season . L. C. V. Bathurst : Ought to be very useful in the future , especially with increased strength and size ; plays very straight and with great patience ; fair field , and should some day make a bowler . *J. R. Randolph : A good field , with very good return ; played a fine innings v. Merton, but must learn to play back with a straight bat , especially on his off- stump. G. M. Soames : Should make a useful bowler another year ; a very slow and careless field ; no bat. *H. B. Ellison : Far too eager to makeruns ; for the greater part of the season a yorker was certain to bowl him; must try to learn defence ; a very poor field . *W. G. Pine - Coffin : A very fair field , and a splendid thrower ; hits very hard in a style peculiarly his own, and which should not be copied ; has beenknownto bowl. H. S. Verity : A useful all- round man; improving as a bat ; must learn to use his reach more , and stand up steadier to balls on his leg -stump ; a fair change bowler ; rather an a w k w a r dfield.
