The Australians , who required 152 runs to save an innings ' defeat , showed to much greater advantage when they batted a second time, and, aided by some mistakes in the field , scored 300 runs for the loss of seven wickets . Raininterfered with the gameon the first two days, and as a natural conse- quence had a prejudicial effect on the run -getting . There were only two scores of over fifty , indeed , in the first hands, and both of these were on the Australian side , Mr. Giffen (52) and Mr. Jarvis (51 not out). W h e nthe South went in a second time , though, they fared better , thanks to some brilliant cricket byMr. W . W. Read. The sixth wicket fell at 140, but Humphreysand Mr. Readhit sowell that 105 runs were added in the next seventy minutes . Both batsmen were in at the finish , Mr. Read 102 , Humphreys 38, and the South 162 on with four wickets still to fall . South, 136 and 245 (six wickets ) ; total , 381. Australians , 2 1 9.
