SUSSEX, not always sure of its strongest eleven , was on several occasions not seen to the best advantage . The result of the season was indeed not altogether satis- factory , showing only four victories to six defeats . Thefour successes , though , wereall very creditable , particularly that over Lancashire at Brighton-a match completely pulled out of the fire . The county was unfortunate in being unable to securetheservices of Messrs. F . M .L u c a sa n dW .N e w h a min o r et h a no n e important match, and the batting was of course considerably weakened in their absence . The two amateurs named, though, both batted in brilliant style , as did Mr. F. Thomas, the Eton captain of 1885 , of last year's Cambridge eleven , who bids fair to be a great acquisition to Sussex . Jesse Hide was useful with both bat and ball , but the best all-round cricket of the year was shownbyWalter Humphreys, whowas not only in the forefront in the batting averages , but was also the mostsuccessful bowlerof the season.
