THE COUNTIES IN 1886. 1 0 3 (1) Surrey v. Yorkshire. Oval, M a y24, 25, and26. Asoften happens with the early fixtures of the season , wet weather very muchinterfered with this match. The result was that the bowlers had very much their ownwaythroughout , as an average of under eight runs per wicket proved . Thehighest score on either side was 30, obtained by W. E. Roller in Surrey's second attempt . The Surrey bowlers eventually won the match for their county with 27 runs to spare -a result very gratifying to the Southerners , who had not defeated Yorkshire at the Oval since 1877. Shuter (70) and Maurice Read(56) . Yorkshire totalled 160 and 157 in their two innings , Ulyett (33 and 78) and Preston (62 and 23) doing the greater part of the scoring . Surrey , wanting 58 runs to win , lost three batsmen (J. Shuter, Diver, and W . W. Read) before they obtained the requisite amount. Surrey , 260 and 61 (three wickets ) ; total , 321. Neither side wasable to place its full strength in the field . W. W. Read and Lohmannwere playing for England at Lord's , while F. M. Lucas and Phillips were unable to assist the hometeam. Although they wonthe toss , and put on 130 runs for the first two wickets , Surrey were only able in their first innings to total 213 , to which J. Shuter (60), Abel (52), and Diver (26) were chief contributors . Walter Humphreys took six of the ten wickets with his lobs . Beaumontand Bowley, however, were even more deadly , as they disposed of their opponents for the small amount of 97 runs , W. Humphreys (37) alone getting into double figures . In their second innings they were more successful , andthe result was a total of 207 , which left Surrey 92 to win.
