James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1887

1 0 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. CountyClub never lost heart , and the reward has been received in the excel- lent form shown by the Surrey eleven just recently . In all , twenty-six matches were played during the summer of 1886 , and of these twenty were won, one drawn , and five lost . In two of the defeats , the return matches with Notts and Sussex , Surrey had the worst of theluck ; but, on the other hand, more than one of the victories were close things . The surprise of the season was Surrey's defeat by Leicestershire at Leicester . The ground was in a very bad state , but still the winners deserve all the credit of a capital performance . Surrey's best record , though , was its double victory over the Australian team, and its total of 501 in the second fixture was the highest ever made against Australian bowling to date. Mr. Walter Read, though he did not begin well , batted in brilliant style in the later fixtures , and to him muchof the county's success was due. Altogether he scored 1487 runs for thirty -four completed innings . Maurice Read, Abel, Messrs . Roller and Shuter also played well , and so did L o h m a n n, w h om a d ea markedadvanceas a batsman. T o Mr. J. Shuter, w h o has captained the eleven for several years , Surrey cricketers owe a heavy debt of gratitude . Lohmann, Bowley, and Beaumontbowled with great success ; a better trio of bowlers it would be difficult to namein a county team last year. Surrey's 494 against Derbyshire was the highest innings in inter -county matches, its 26 against Leicestershire the lowest . R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
