K e m p, were too good for the Australians , whowere compelled to follow onafter a poor show of only 79 runs in their first hands. A. Hearne and Wootton disposed of them a second time for 123, leaving Kent 32 to win . These they obtained without the loss of a wicket, gaining thereby the distinction of being the only county to beat the Australians in both 1884 and 1886. Kent, 171 and35 (no wicket) ; total , 206. Thoughthe Southerners were in a minority of 129 on the first hands, in the follow on they played up so well that at the finish they were 321 runs on. All the first eight batsmen on the Australian side scored double figures , though by far the largest contributor was Mr. Palmer with 93. W h e nthe South went in a second time, Frank Hearne (111 ), M. Read (109), and Mr. W. W. Read (87) punished the Australian bowling severely , and the two professionals added 191 runs for the second wicket.
