THOUGHthe season was not one of great success , none the less the cricket shown by the Kent eleven was on the whole very good. Of the fourteen inter -county matches , five were won, and six lost . Thetriumphs of the county, though, include in addition a glorious victory over the Australian team-an achievement of which the menof Kenthave good reason to be proud. The Can- terbury weekwas attended with the best of luck for the Kenteleven , and their double success over the Australians and Yorkshire showed effectually of what stuff the county team, whenproperly represented , is composed. Anymention of Kentcricket in 1886 would be incomplete without conspicuous notice of the bril- liant batting of George Hearne, who made987 runs in twenty -four completed inn- ings, and of Lord Harris , whowas still in his best form, though unable to play so muchas of old. Wootton's bowling , too, was one of the maincontributaries to the successes of the Kent eleven . H etook, as will be seen from the averages , 110 wickets at an average of under sixteen runs . Martin , a left -handed bowler, did good service in the later fixtures , andbids fair to be of great use to the county.
