Raininterfered materially with the play on the first two days , and the game hadnot advanced sufficiently to admit of a second innings for Gloucestershire . A tthe outset the weather was so unfavourable that Gloucestershire , whowent in second, could notbat till the third morning. Briggs ' all -round cricket was the feature of the match. H escored 72 of Lancashire's first total of 184 , and took seven of the Gloucestershire wickets for 50 runs . Mr. Hornbymade66 out of 84 runs while he was at the wicket in Lancashire's second innings . Thematch wasdrawn. Lancashire , 184 and 142 ; total , 326. Gloucestershire , 119. Though rain re- ducedthe play on the first dayto less than an hour, the scoring on both sides wasfairly good. The three completed innings ranged from 177 to 210, and the principal contributors were Bates (37 and 72) and Mr. J. H. Brain (71( and 28 not out) for Yorkshire and Gloucestershire respectively . Preston , whoshowed excellent cricket in Yorkshire's first innings for 58 not out, also bowled with great success . Dr. E. M. Grace's " lobs ," too , proved remarkably effective in the first innings of the Yorkshiremen . His five wickets cost 46 runs . Yorkshire , 210 and204 ; total , 415. Though rain interfered with the play several times on the opening day, still 664 runs were scored before the third evening, andwith only thirteen wickets down, giving an average of over 51 runs. Messrs. E. M .GraceandPagem a d e83 runs for the first wicket of Gloucester- shire , and to this Messrs . W .G. Grace (84) and Radcliffe (66) added 131 before another fell . O nthe other side Scotton and Shrewsbury opened almost as well , the score showing 51 before a batsman of Notts was dismissed . Barnes (156) and Shrewsbury (66) increased the total by 65, and then Barnes and Gunn (80not out) madethe stand of a run-getting match, the pair contributing 181 whilethey were together . W h e nplay ceased Notts hadheaded the Gloucester- shire total by 22 runs , having seven wickets still in hand. Notts , 343 (three wickets ) . Gloucestershire , 321 . (8) Gloucestershire v. Middlesex. Gloucester , August 9, 10, and 11 . Heavyrain on the first night was altogether prejudicial to the prospect of Gloucestershire , and Middlesex , with the best of the luck , had an easy win.
