James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1886

Public opinion predicted a close contest , though Oxford, despite their con- tinued ill success , were regarded to be slightly the better of two weak elevens . Along stand , however, by the two first batsmen of Cambridge, Messrs . Wright and Bainbridge , at the end of the first day, turned the scale in favour of their side , and their partnership gave Cambridge a long lead of 151 runs , which proved altogether too much for the Oxford team . Messrs . Bainbridge and Wright put on 152 runs before they were separated , and it is worthy of remark that this number has never before been recorded for the first wicket in Inter -University matches . The Oxonians were very unfortunate in the first innings in losing Messrs . Brain and Key, unluckily ; the former from a bumpy ball ; the latter from playing on. Theformer , too , was given out leg before without a run in the second innings , and the most dangerous batsman on the Oxford side was dismissed forone run in the match. The chief feature of the second day was the stand of Messrs. Pageand Key in Oxford's second innings . The latter not only hit freely , but showed good defence , and his 51 was a really good innings . Mr. Page's score of 78 (not out) was, though, inferior to none in the match. H e showed the greatest pluck and coolness at a trying time , and had the tail only given him fair sup- port, hemight have madethe match very interesting . As it was, Cambridge lost three of the best wickets in making the 89 wanted to win, Mr. C. D. Buxton taking out his bat for a well -got 36. Mr. Toppin's fast bowling was very effective in Oxford's first innings . H etook seven wickets for 51 runs. J. H. Brain (Clifton ), cRockb Toppin E. H. Buckland(Marlborough),b Rock K. J.
