Garrison stationed at Halifax , Nova Scotia (consisting of the 60th Royal Rifles , the 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers , 7th Battery Royal artillery , a detachment of Royal Engineers , and the officers of her Majesty's ships on the North American and West Indian stations , whose summer quarters were at Halifax ) , and a handsome silver cup offered , emblematic of the Championship of America, open to any teams in the United States of Canada, to become the property of the winners . Prizes were offered also for individual averages . There were three entries , viz . (1) England, represented by Captain N. Willoughby Wallace (captain), Lieut . Hon. Keith Turnour, Lieut . H. L. Farmer, and Lieut . R. C. Davis , 60th Rifles ; Capt. W. Taylor , Lieut . F. Carpenter , Lieut . M. Singleton , and Lieut. Gardiner, 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers ; Lieut . J. Reid, Lieut. J. Mitchell , Lieut . Barker, and W. C. Stubbing . (2) All Canada, represented b y Rev. T. D. Phillipps , Ottawa (captain ) ; Messrs . Hebert and Swinyard, Hamilton ; Street , London; E. Powell and Wright, Toronto ; A. Powell and C. B. Brodie , Ottawa ; J. Goreham, C. Bullock , Daly, and Kearney, of Halifax . (3) America, represented by Messrs. C. A., R. S., and D. S. Newhall (captain ), Spencer Meade, J. B. Large, E. and W. F. Hopkinson, R. L. Baird, R, and G. Ashbridge , H. Magee, F. E. Brewster , R. N. Caldwell , and W. Welsh, jr., all of Philadelphia. The first match-America v. Canada-was played August 18th and 19th, and resulted : America, first innings , 191 ; Canada, first innings 94, second innings 66-total , 160. America winning by an innings and 31 runs . The second match-America v. England-resulted : America, first innings 205 ; England, first innings 117, second innings 83-total 200. America winning by an innings and five runs, thus winning the cup. Thethird match-England v. Canada-resulted : England, first innings 158 , second innings 89 for seven wickets ; Canada, 143 and 103. England winning b y three wickets. The batting prize was won by Mr. D. S. Newhall, average 49.66 . The bowling prize was wonby Mr. C. A. Newhall , average 6.83 . The prize for the highest individual score was won by Mr. R. S. Newhall with 79 (v. Canada). A similar tournament was given in Philadelphia in September of the following year , in which the same teams competed, and the Philadelphians again came off victors . The cup (thereafter known as the " Halifax Cup") having thus become the property of the winning eleven , was on May25th, 1880, by them formally handed over to the Publication Committee of the " Ameri- can Cricketer ," to be by them awarded annually to the champion club of Philadelphia . It has since been played for every year by the clubs in Phila- delphia , and has been held as follows :-1880, Young America; 1881 , Young America; 1882 , Belmont ; 1883 , YoungAmerica ; 1884, Belmont ; 1885, Young America. Besides the Halifax Cup, annual competitions for batting and bowling prizes have been contested for among the Philadelqhia clubs , since 1880, the winners of each year being- B A T T I N G , 1880-M r.
