T H EU N I V E R S I T I E SA N DP U B L I CS C H O O L SIN 1 8 8 5. 1 5 5 changebowler, in pace mediumto fast . Alfred S. Caldwell : Bats with lots of pluck and energy , and a pretty sure scorer with far-pitched bowling , but is too impatient , andhas too few strokes , and is very weak in his back play ; a good field andsmart wicket-keeper ; would be a good fast bowler , if the well-pitched balls occurred more frequently . Piercy H. Morrison : A good and vigorous bat ; avery hard and straight hitter , with plenty of confidence , his chief fault being toplayforward at too short a ball ; not a good judge of a run ; a strong , good field ; fast bowler, butas a rule m u c htoo short-pitched. AlexanderM .Paterson : Promised to be a very good bat, but fell off unaccountably at end of season ; very painstaking , but not too patient ; not good at slow bowling ; fields well at point, covering muchground ; safe catch . Harold Paton : A good and at times successful bat, scoring quickly when once set ; has several poor strokes , how- ever, especially the tendency to swing round to leg in playing at a straight ball ; remarkably quick in the field , very sure and covering a lot of ground ; bowls lobs , sometimes with success . Maxwell Rose : Has been of great use for his bowling ; which is the best in the team, mediumpaced and fast off the ground ; withexperience should be very successful ; ought to try more for catches on the off side, and less for the stumps ; a poor field , very slow of starting ; improving as a bat, but must get over his stiff style before he can hope to be at all good. John J. Smeaton: A most useful all-round m a n; bowls well, somewhatover mediumin pace ; a fairly good field , and a rapidly improving bat , with plenty of pluck and life when in ; his batting would have been better if he had cured. himself of hanging his bat in back play. Patrick E. Smith : Has been a fairly successful bowler in the few matches he has played , bowling a pace which is apt to tempt batsmen to make mistakes ; a poor bat, having little defence and too great a tendency to hit ; slow and not very certain in the field . Frank Woodhead: A good solid bat, with a strong defence and great hitting power; promises to be really goodnextseason ; a fair field , butrather slow; bowlsfast. roundhand occasionally , but with no commandof pitch .
