Watson (Capt.) : A careful bat, with a strong defence , who might become very good indeed , but at present he does not sufficiently use his considerable hitting power ; a good deep field , and proved himself to be a good captain . G. M. Jones (Capt. for 1886) : Plays fast bowling remarkably well , but is hardly quick enough on his feet for slow ; not at present a good field . C. H. Nicholls : Abrilliant field at point , and a powerful bat, whosometimes made runs at a great pace , but lacked patience ; a useful bowler. *C. LL. Hemmerde: Thefast bowler of the eleven, andthe most successful during the season ; batted very well in practice , but was unsuccessful in foreign matches ; a good field , and can throw . H. Lyon : Didgood service for the eleven behind the wicket , and on the off -side was sometimes brilliant ; a free bat, but apt tomakemistakes . J. S. Watney : Adetermined hitter , with a good eye ; he proved most useful as a bat ; as a field he wasquite first -rate . F. H. Gresson : Asound and stylish left -handed bat, giving good promise ; rather uncertain as a bowler, but at times difficult . Hon. F. J. N. Thesiger : A bat with several good points , but not yet fully developed ; a useful bowler , always keeping a good length , and with some spin ; should pay attention to his fielding . M. A. Teale : Agoodbat, but not always so successful as he deserved ; has a very pretty cut, andalways plays the ball hard ; agood field , and can throw. H. Gibson : Apains- taking and correct bat. with pretty style , but at present wants more strength ; asteady bowler. C. E. M. G. Nepean : A very useful bat, without muchpre- tence to style ; he madeseveral long scores during the season , but was not fortu- nate in matches ; a good field . V. F.
