Martineau : A very good all-round cricketer ; as a bat he has very strong defence , and can cut well andhit to the on side ; a slow round bowler , with high delivery , and bowls a good length ; a good field at mid-wicket . W. F. Whitwell : Auseful all -round player ; as a bat has beensuccessful , hitting with confidence , but rather too anxious to begin directly hegets to the wickets ; a steady fast bowler , with break back ; a good field and catch ; Captain for 1886. *A. C. Lascelles : As a bat extremely short of confi- dence, so that his play is rather tame ; a fair change bowler , and goodfield . *H. P. Jillard : Afair bat, with plenty of confidence , but rather too impatient ; a moderate field . *A. N. Clegg : Owing to an injured knee was unable to play during the early part of the season ,and in consequence had but little practice ; a fair bat, but rather uncertain ; a good out-field , throws in loosely . J. F. Whit- well : A good bat, but ought to makemore use of his height and strength ; cuts andhits well to leg ; a very fair change bowler, and good field . P. Castle : A steady bat, with good defence and plenty of confidence ; a moderate field at point . *C. B. Marriott : Has disappointed us ; he bowled fairly well at the beginning of the season ; a moderate bat, and slack in the field . C. H. Hunter : A nuncertain bat, playing well at times ; keeps wicket fairly well . H. C. Clegg : Promised well during the early part of the season , playing with a straight bat, with a good defence ; rather slow in the field . L.
