James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1886

1 2 8 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S ' A N N U A L. becomean exceedingly good bowler ; has a capital delivery ; rises fast from the pitch, and is pretty straight ; has improved very muchas a bat, but plays too muchfromhis shoulder (Capt. 1886). J. C. Hare : Is a very steady bat, with no style ; has improved greatly as a field , but has no idea of dash. A. P. Crawley : Has batted most creditably , perhaps improving more rapidly than any other m e m b e rof the eleven; is rather inclined to let the ball hit the bat in his back play, but has made his runs generally in very good style ; considering his slow- ness , is a very decent field . J. S. Scott : Has got hardly any runs, but plays in very nice form to fast bowling ; should do remarkably well next year if he should learn to play back a little more ; will be very useful as a wicket-keeper . *F. E. C. Hoffmann : Bats in no better formthan last year ; does not stand up or play straight on the leg side ; might become a very fair field , but as yet has not madethis his object ; was one of the long list of disappointments as a bowler. A. B. Peile : Wasanother great disappointment , failing altogether as a bowler ; however, other great bowlers have failed this year ; is no bat, sacrificing every- thing for a smite . *P. T. Richardson : A very tame bat ; will always be so till he gives up a certain style of his own-a peculiar swing of the bat-which is totally incompatible with hard play, or indeed with getting any runs ; has good defence , and plays fairly straight , but does not score : must not mind being spoken to in the field . J. C. F. Compton : A fast erratic bowler, with not the least accuracy of pitch . B R I G H T O N C L L E G E . Captain for 1885 , G. H. Cotterill . R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
