Although, however, the Gentlemen were in a minority of 180 runs on the first innings , the Gentlemen, mainly through the brilliant cricket of Messrs . Read and Grace and K e m p, played up so pluckily that there was at one time just a chance of their success . Gunn, Shrewsbury, andBriggs contributed 242 out of 338 in the first innings of the Players , and Shrewsbury, it will be seen , was the highest scorer on the side . Messrs . Read, Grace. and K e m p, by comparison , were responsible for 295 and 372, madeby the Gentlemen in their second venture , and in each case the cricket was exceptionally good. Mr. Readwas in four hours and three -quarters , and his score has only b e e nbeatenin these matches by two batsmen, Messrs. W .G. Grace and I. D. Walker. In the three days 1,044 runs were totalled for thirty -five wickets . A tthe finish the Players wanted 40to win, with five wickets to fall . Mr. Kempand Sherwin each caught five batsmen at the wickets . Messrs . Brain , Newham, Pullen , Key, Toppin, and Horner played for the first time for the G e n t l e m e nin this m a t c h.
