James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1886
9 4 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S ' A N N U A L . (14) Surrey v. Yorkshire. Oval, August 27, 28, and29. A most exciting match , brought to an end only twenty minutes before time on the third day. Mr. Shuter (72) and Abel (52) made a good start for Surrey , and the score was 125 before the first wicket fell . The ground , though , played treacherously as the innings advanced , and, as it happened, Yorkshire had all the luck in this respect . Ulyett's bowling on the drying wicket proved very successful , and the last nine batsmen of Surrey only added 62 runs . York- shire were able to head their opponents by 81 runs, and though Surrey played upwell when they went in a second time-notably Mr. Diver-this advantage told greatly against them. Yorkshire had three hours left to get 122 runs to win, but the Surrey team fielded up so well that they had only twenty minutes to spare , and it was entirely the good cricket of Emmett and the youngster Preston at the finish which enabled themto claim a majority of three wickets . Yorkshire , 268 and 122 (seven wickets ) ; total , 390. Surrey , 187 and 202 ; total , 3 8 9. Maidens. R u n s. O v e r s . 2 9 2 0 2 0 W k t s. 5 Ulyett (1st innings Surrey).
